Audemars Piguet Millenary Hand-Wound Minute Repeater

The audible indication of the time, initially created to “tell” the time in the dark in an age when electricity had not yet been invented, is the oldest of all horological complications. Audemars Piguet has made it part of its fundamental identity, by creating minute repeater and grand strike models right from the time of its founding in 1875. The new Millenary Minute Repeater model is in direct line with this tradition. This exceptional watch with its oval case and three-dimensional architecture reveals the essentials of its refined movement: a new AP escapement, a double balance-spring, as well as the striking mechanism and its gongs. The result is a genuine visual delight.

New Watch - Audemars Piguet Jarno Trulli Chronograph

This new model, issued in a worldwide limited edition of 500, available as of October 6th from the Audemars Piguet Boutique located in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping precinct, will be initially be launched exclusively in Japan prior to its international release by the end of the year.

The Royal Oak Offshore needs no introduction. An extreme version of the legendary Royal Oak, the quintessential sports watch that has become an Audemars Piguet icon, this superlative line of timepieces embodies the talent and inventiveness that the Manufacture has dedicated to serving aesthetics and performance. Successively associated with some of the greatest Formula 1 racing drivers, such as Rubens Barrichello and Juan Pablo Montoya, it is now issued in an exceptional new limited series bearing the signature of Jarno Trulli.

Celebrating the partnership established between Audemars Piguet and the Italian champion in 2008, the new Royal Oak Offshore Jarno Trulli Chronograph embodies the values shared by the racing driver and the Manufacture: a passion for perfection and precision, coupled with an obstinate determination to maintain high standards. For Jarno Trulli, these values are conveyed through the excellence he displays in his career as a racing driver, a daily experience that leaves no room for rough estimates, but is instead governed by the rigorous precision that makes all the difference. These same values are also manifested in Jarno Trulli’s other passion for vineyards and making his own wine, a task that calls for patience, experience and humility – all qualities closely resembling those exercised by a master-watchmaker at his workbench. For Audemars Piguet, this close sense of kinship now fi nds a fresh form of expression in the Royal Oak Offshore Jarno Trulli Chronograph.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Tour Auto 2008 Chronograph

To mark the third year of its partnership as Official Timekeeper of the Tour Auto Lissac, the prestigious watch Manufacture Audemars Piguet launched Royal Oak Offshore Tour Auto 2008 Chronograph. With only 100 numbered timepieces made, this limited edition symbolizes the successful alliance between the worlds of automobile racing and fine watchmaking. In 1972, as the Tour de France Automobile wound its way across France for the 73rd year, Audemars Piguet created the very first stainless steel luxury sports watch, the Royal Oak, typified by its octagonal bezel and pure, timeless lines. Twenty years later, in 1992, Peter Auto re-launched the automobile challenge in its original form and Audemars Piguet created a new version of the Royal Oak with a true sporting pedigree the Offshore Chronograph.

In tribute to this acclaimed timepiece, the limited edition designed by the Manufacture for the Tour Auto 2008 is full of references to automobile racing. The black dial decorated with white counters evokes the chequered flag and the bright-red hands bring to mind the instruments of racing cars. The perforated leather strap is reminiscent of typical 70s motoring upholstery. Even the presentation case, in the form of a competition-standard air filter, captures the motor-racing feel.

The Tour Auto Lissac is not simply one of the most illustrious automobile rallies; it is also a gruelling competition that puts mechanics to the test. The mechanism beneath the octagonal case of the Royal Oak Offshore Tour Auto 2008 Chronograph is a blend of avant-garde technology, the quest for performance and the search for perfection, reflecting the values of automobile racing.

Audemars Piguet - Quincy Jones visits the Manufacture

On the eve of the traditional Swiss watch industry vacation, a very special guest and above all a longtime friend came to salute the remarkable work of the watchmakers in the Manufacture.

During his visit, the legendary multi-talented artist, trumpeter, composer and producer Quincy Jones, discovered the manufacturing secrets of Audemars Piguet timepieces and in particular those of the watch bearing his name, the Millenary Quincy Jones, which was presented at the SIHH 2010.

Before the workshop tour, Audemars Piguet Art Director Octavio Garcia recalled the fruitful work undertaken with the famous musician in creating the Millenary Quincy Jones, a watch featuring resolutely contemporary lines and a sophisticated design playing on nuances and subtle contrasts between brilliant and satin-polished surfaces echoing the notes on the keyboard of a piano, an instrument dear to the artist’s heart.

Throughout this radiantly sunny day, Quincy Jones admired the work of these skilled watchmaking artisans, commenting that “these men and women really impress me by their precision and the expertise they display in shaping these timeless gems. They are great creative talents and passionately dedicated artists, just like those for whom I serve as producer.”

The artiste and Philippe Merk, Audemars Piguet CEO. © Audemars Piguet

For several years, Audemars Piguet and this exceptional individual have been associated in developing “Project Q”, aimed at raising political and public awareness of young people’s need for self-expression and the means that must be provided to ensure they fulfil their true potential. The cornerstone of “Project Q” is the “Q Prize”, an international award presented by Audemars Piguet and honouring a public figure or social organisation having played a central role on behalf of children. Through his Quincy Jones Foundation, the artist is also committed to helping children by improving their well-being, their health and their dignity. The new Millenary Quincy Jones watch will contribute to raising funds for this foundation.

Know-how, artistic passion and empathy… Such shared values were bound to further strengthen the ties between this music legend and the famous Swiss watch manufacturer.

Through his Quincy Jones Foundation, the artist is also committed to helping children by improving their well-being, their health and their dignity. © Audemars Piguet

In speaking of the man behind the foundation, Audemars Piguet CEO Philippe Merk said: “Quincy Jones is not only an amazing artist and a daring entrepreneur, but above all a man with a big heart. One cannot help admiring his career, especially considering the difficulties he encountered during his childhood. He gives us an important life lesson and naturally inspires profound respect.”

Before returning to Montreux where he will present his new “Quincy Jones & the Global Gumbo All Stars” ensemble, this informal yet highly emotional visit paid to the Manufacture will remain engraved in the memory of the company and its personnel. Much like the master-watchmakers who have been steadily forging the reputation of Audemars Piguet for the past 135 years, Quincy Jones has been shaping the history of music for several decades already.

Royal Oak Offshore Pride of Argentina: A tribute to the Bicentenary of Argentina

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the May Revolution, which led to the independence of Argentina, the prestigious Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet has created a limited edition watch Royal Oak Offshore Pride of Argentina.

From the heart of the Valleé de Joux in Switzerland, the master watchmakers of the Audemars Piguet Manufacture wanted to pay homage to the May Revolution of 1810, one of the most significant milestones in the rich and intricate construction of the nation of Argentina.

The design of the iconic Royal Oak Offshore model conveys the strength and the character of its lines to the exclusive collection Royal Oak Offshore Pride of Argentina, while elegantly highlighting the colors of the national flag. No less than three years were needed to develop this exceptional timepiece, reflecting the unique tradition and expertise of Audemars Piguet‘s watchmakers.

This commemorative piece is presented in two versions: one model in steel and titanium, a striking and innovating combination of materials, and the other model in precious 18-carat pink gold. The deep blue hue of the dial reminds us of the blue sky when the sun of May prevails, symbolized itself by the rose gold of the case or of the numerical indexes that records the passing of the time. The numerals are handmade of solid 18-carat gold, individually screwed onto the dial.

Both models feature a case back especially engraved with the inscription “Pride of Argentina – 1810-2010 – Limited Edition” and with the monument of the Cabildo, where the May Revolution started.

The collection Royal Oak Offshore Pride of Argentina is part of a very few limited editions in the history of Audemars Piguet. With a production limited to 50 pieces for its pink gold version and 100 for its steel – titanium version, it is an exclusive testimony of 200 years of Argentine independence.

Audemars Piguet Givrine Watch

Givrine is not as understated as Deva or Danae. It literally writhes with passion, golden tongues of flame encompassing the case, invading into the mother-of-pearl dials. These intense, bold designs state their femininity with force and gentleness at the same time; each tongue is a delicate cone, yet combined together they form a living organism, and octopus, or perhaps Medusa's head – the object of their desire being, obviously, time itself. Givrine arouses mystical, chaotic associations of lost control, and it seems to conceal, while itself being beautiful, a promise of something beyond beauty.

Audemars Piguet 2010 New Watch - Royal Oak Day Date

One of Audemars Piguet's nicest watches for 2010, is one that received little mention in their current media blast.

Here is the new for 2010 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Day Date watch. A lovely simple creation it takes the classic Royal Oak case and style and adds "binocular eyes" that serve as subdials for the day and the date. Movement of course is an in-house made Audemars Piguet automatic - not sure right now of the movement reference number. Unlike the more aggressive Royal Oak Offshore, the Royal Oak is a relatively thin and very comfortable timepiece with a winning design that still looks fresh after more than 30 years. The simplicity of the time, day, and date indicators is unmatched. Really an attractive little piece.

It comes in steel with a steel bracelet (excellent finishing) as well as in 18k rose gold matched with a brown alligator strap. Price is $15,400 in steel and $26,900 in rose gold.

Audemars Piguet Ladies' Jules Audemars Tourbillon Chronograph watch

Associating the extreme elegance of black stingray leather with glittering diamonds and a complex tourbillon makes the Audemars Piguet Ladies' Jules Audemars Tourbillon Chronograph a truly rare watch that boldly asserts its distinctive character and voluptuous charm. One cannot fail to be captivated by the striking contrast between the baguette-cut diamonds rimming the bezel and the brilliant-cut diamonds adorning the case sides and lugs, as well as the hour circle and the paving on the dial. The latter is exquisitely enhanced by the blued chronograph seconds and counter hands.

The aperture at 6 o’clock enables one to admire the beating heart of the watch, while the sapphire caseback reveals further glimpses of the magical mechanism that is also endowed with chronograph and small seconds functions.

Audemars Piguet 2010 New Watch - Royal Oak Equation of Time Watch

Even among the most prestigious Swiss watch manufacturers, the equation of time complication is one not often encountered. However, this ingenious astronomic indication showing the difference in minutes between true solar time and civil time has been a consistent offering for Audemars Piguet since the Jules Audemars Equation of Time appeared in 2000. In 2010, the equation of time makes its debut in the brand's legendary Royal Oak watch collection, being introduced in both a stainless steel and an 18-karat pink gold version. The complex movements in these prestigious timepieces also animate a perpetual calendar with moon phases and leap year indication, as well as displays for the times of sunrise and sunset.

This is one of the larger Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches, although its 42mm case diameter makes it quite a bit smaller than many of the more overtly sporty Royal Oak Offshore models. A delightful creation of casual elegance, the Royal Oak case in gold or stainless steel displays the impeccable finishing and striking angular design which has made it a luxury icon for more than three decades. A predominantly brushed finish is contrasted by hand-executed polished bevels around the strap attachments; the famous octagon bezel is similarly contrasted, and displays the indispensable 6-sided white gold bolts which merge with the screws of the same material seen on the caseback. Silvered dials reflect pure Royal Oak heritage, with the signature "grande tapisserie" waffle pattern, and slender ovoid hands and hour markers in polished pink or white gold. The hands for the various calendar indications, as well as those showing sunrise and sunset times are crafted from blued steel--an elegant touch that provides superb contrast and tremendous visual allure. Small corrector buttons found on the case flanks are present to enable setting of the moon phase indicator and the various displays of the perpetual calendar.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Equation of Time watch rightfully possesses a sapphire crystal exhibition window in the caseback. This allows a clear view of the remarkable 2120 caliber, and its perfectly decorated bridges and skeletonized rotor showing the Audemars Piguet initials and fine engraving work. (However, the rotor can also display symbols or initials chosen by the client) In this complex iteration, known as 2120/2808, the movement comprises 423 parts in total, each being meticulously finished by hand according to the most demanding standards of traditional haute horlogerie. Despite the complexity, overall height is just 5.35mm, a fact which can largely be attributed to the remarkable 2.45mm of the AP 2120 base--to this day, the slimmest self-winding caliber with central rotor in the world. The variable inertia balance with its Masselotte regulating weights beats at the infrequently encountered rate of 19,800 vibrations per hour, and power reserve is 40 hours when the barrel is fully tightened.

Much of the action in the Royal Oak Equation of Time watch takes place out of sight, beneath the dial. The complex perpetual calendar mechanism adjusts itself through the year in accord with the lengths of various months, and even the cycle of leap years. A 135-toothed wheel used by Audemars Piguet for the moon phase indication results in remarkable accuracy for this classical complication: after 122 years of continuous operation, the moon indicator will show a difference from the actual lunar cycle of just one day! Specialized cams, which are calculated for the varying latitudes around the globe allow for an accurate, customized indication of the sunrise and sunset times. The city specified by the client from among 250 possible choices is the one which appears on the angled rim of the dial, along with the graduated scale that the equation of time is read from. The equation of time hand also offers another remarkable feature in this watch: it can reveal the exact moment when the sun is at its culmination point.

Audemars Piguet will produce small numbers of the Royal Oak Equation of Time watch each year, although it will not be a limited edition series, Whether in 18K gold or steel, the reference is fitted to a hand-sewn crocodile leather strap and the elegant folding clasp which when open, presents the gracefully joined AP initials.

Audemars Piguet Millenary Quincy Jones Limited Edition Watch

Audemars Piguet has released several different variations of the Millenary, and I think this one is by far its best. It is a watch unconditionally fitting of a Music Impresario such as Quincy Jones. The watch – limited to 500 pieces – has a blackened and polished steel case with the Millenary’s signature “off-center” positioning of the hours, minutes and seconds functions. The case back is engraved with Quincy Jones’ signature, and also reads “Millenary Quincy Jones – Limited Edition” as a reminder of its exclusivity. The piece is comes on a black leather strap with matching “AP” folding clasp. The watch contains Audemars Piguet’s in-house Caliber 3120.

Who is Quincy Jones, you ask? He is arguably the most successful and accomplished musician, composer, producer, arranger and conductor of all time! Some of you may know him as the producer of Thriller, by late pop icon Michael Jackson. Others, for his landmark 1989 album, Back On The Block–named “Album Of The Year” at the 1990 Grammy Awards– which brought such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Miles Davis together with Ice T, Big Daddy Kane and Melle Mel to create the first fusion of the be bop and hip hop musical traditions. You can click here to learn more about him on The Official Quincy Jones Website.

Audemars Piguet and Sports

Even though when having to relate Audemars Piguet to ssport we would usually think about it Royal Oak Offshore and its connection to the ocean, the luxurious wristwatch company is also related to other sports such as: golf, basketball, cricket or sky.

According to basketball, the company has honoured the dominating championship Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal with its Royal Oak Offshore Shaquille O’Neal edition.

(Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal)

Audemars Piguet's legendary Royal Oak Offshore proves that this design is one of the greatest in high luxury sports watches. Introduced more than twelve years ago as a variation to their already successful Royal Oak watch collection, Audemars Piguet produced a watch which further expanded boundaries in both luxury and size, paving the way for much of todays current celebration of boldly dimensioned watches, as well as the enthusiastic acceptance of unconventional materials such as carbon fibre or rubber for luxury timepieces. The Offshore watch collection from Audemars Piguet encompasses everything from an automatic chronograph with date, to an automatic chronograph with full perpetual calendar and moonphases. Stunning limited editions such as the Offshore Alinghi Polaris or the Offshore Rubens Barrichello series incorporate innovative materials or technical solutions that are refreshingly unconventional, yet perfectly in tune with the ethic of perfection that Audemars Piguet has pursued as a manufacturer of haute horlogerie since its founding in 1875.

Regarding to cricket, Sachin “Little Master” Tendulkar was Audermars Piguet’s ambassador for years because of its exceptional punch style of hitting the ball.

(Sachin “Little Master” Tendulkar)

According to golf, more than ten ambassadors represent the company like the open champion Cristie Kerr, Nick Faldo, Vijay Singh or Morgan Pressel

(Cristie Kerr)

The Royal Oak Offshore watch line from Audemars Piguet demonstrates Audemars Piguet's ability to cultivate classic designs which continue to captivate watch lovers. Offered in a variety of metals, including steel, titanium, gold, and platinum, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watch collection shows off the immaculate finish work that has long distinguished the Royal Oak watch line.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak: Nick Faldo

Nick Faldo (b.1957) was one of European’s best golf players in the 1980s and 1990s, and recently honored with nighthood (Sir Nick Faldo) in recognition of an incredible sporting career by the English queen. What most golfers probably do not know (with the exception of the watch connoisseurs amongst them), is the long time partnership between Nick Faldo and Audemars Piguet.

Audemars Piguet, King of special editions, created three different Royal Oak watches to honor golf legend Nick Faldo. The first model showed up in 1992, with reference 14790. A rose gold Royal Oak, limited to 325 pieces. In 1997, Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak Nick Faldo edition ref.15090, limited to 150 pieces in stainless steel. And last not but least, and probably the most recognizable Nick Faldo edition, is the 2002 Royal Oak ref. 15190, limited to 450 pieces. This last model has a platinum bezel and a stainless steel case and bracelet. The 1997 model and the 2002 model both came with a Nick Faldo golf bag by Mizuno. The golf clubs have the Nick Faldo signature and the AP logo, embedded in their famous octagonal shape.

This ref. 15090 Royal Oak Nick Faldo edition comes without the sought after golf bag, but is still worth acquiring/collecting without one. For 4750 EU, you have quite a limited Royal Oak (40mm) in pretty good condition that you won’t see on someone else’s wrist. This Royal Oak has caliber 2225 ticking inside, based on the famous Jaeger LeCoultre caliber 889/1 movement, regarded for being an excellent automatic winding movement. It wasn’t until 2005 that Audemars Piguet did a follow-up on this movement by their own in-house caliber 3120 as found in the current line of Royal Oak (Date) watches.

Although it might look like a boring composition of stainless steel (with the grey dial and all), in the flesh, it is a pretty looking watch that really stands out on your wrist. Watches like these really play with (sun)light, even the slightest ray of light will make polished parts (like the white gold screws in the bezel) shine.
